Alabama is number one...in football. Why can’t we be number one in education, low poverty levels, unemployment and economic growth?
Because Alabama’s 1901 constitution puts the power of decision making in the hands of Montgomery, it slows things down for city and county officials as they work for economic development in their areas. In fact, in most cases a constitutional amendment and a statewide vote is required.
And, because our legislators spend almost half of their time debating local issues, there’s little time left to solve the big problems that face our state.
Under the 1901 constitution, a county cannot work on its own to improve its community. So, while we debate and micro-manage and wait for the next statewide vote, other states leap ahead and outpace us.
It’s time for Home Rule. It’s time to Bring It Back Home, Alabama.
